TRAFFIC RULES IN NEVADA

Travelling to the Pennzoil 400 is all part of the weekend adventure, but being familiar with local driving rules can help avoid unnecessary stress. Nevada’s road laws are broadly in line with most U.S. states, though there are a few key points visitors should be aware of.

Driving in Nevada

As throughout the United States, traffic in Nevada keeps to the right-hand side of the road. If this isn’t what you’re used to, take extra care when pulling out of parking areas, navigating intersections, and making U-turns near Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Speed limits

Speed limits vary by road type. Residential streets typically allow 25–30 mph (40–48 km/h), while state highways are usually 55–65 mph (89–105 km/h). On interstates, limits can reach 70 mph (113 km/h). Always watch roadside signs, especially near exits and junctions where limits may change abruptly. Speed enforcement is common, and fines can be costly.

Traffic lights & intersections

Traffic signals are closely monitored, with cameras in place at some major intersections. Turning right on red is permitted after a full stop, unless signs indicate otherwise. Pedestrians always have priority, and drivers should avoid entering an intersection on yellow if it’s safe to stop.

Alcohol & driving

Nevada takes impaired driving very seriously. The legal blood alcohol limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, with zero tolerance for underage drivers. During major events such as NASCAR weekends, sobriety checkpoints may be set up around the Speedway. If alcohol is involved, use a designated driver or opt for taxis or rideshare services.

Seat belt laws

Seat belts are mandatory for all occupants, front and rear. Nevada operates under a primary enforcement law, meaning police can stop a vehicle solely for a seat belt violation. Make sure everyone is buckled up before setting off.

Right-of-way & pedestrians

Drivers must give way to pedestrians in marked crosswalks and at unmarked intersections. When two vehicles arrive at the same time, the driver on the right has priority. Expect increased pedestrian movement near the Speedway and reduce speed accordingly.

If you’re pulled over

If stopped by police, pull over safely to the right-hand side of the road. At night, choose a well-lit area if possible. Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel, follow instructions carefully, and remain calm and respectful.
