Las Vegas Motor Speedway is a 1.5-mile tri-oval in Las Vegas, Nevada. Opened in 1996, the venue was built by International Speedway Corporation (ISC) and rapidly became an important stop on the NASCAR schedule. Its resume has expanded well beyond stock cars over the years, too, with events from IndyCar, ARCA, NHRA, and other major series helping to cement its reputation as one of the most multi-purpose motorsport facilities in the United States.
NASCAR’s top tier arrived soon after the track opened. The NASCAR Cup Series first raced there on March 1, 1998, when Mark Martin claimed the inaugural victory. IndyCar also featured early in the Speedway’s history, with Richie Hearn winning the first event, while the NASCAR Truck Series visited the venue’s early years and saw Jack Sprague take the first win.
As NASCAR’s footprint in Las Vegas grew, the Cup schedule eventually expanded to two races per season: a spring date and a fall event that now plays a role in the NASCAR Playoffs. That second race has elevated the track’s importance, often making it a key moment in the championship fight.
On track, Las Vegas Motor Speedway has built a reputation for tight, unpredictable finishes. Permanent lighting was installed in 2011, opening the door to night racing and adding to the atmosphere for spectators. More recently, the Speedway produced one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history in 2024, when Kyle Larson edged Chris Buescher by just 0.001 seconds.
Several big names have shaped the track’s Cup history. Jimmie Johnson tops the all-time win list at Las Vegas with four victories. In the modern era, Kyle Larson has been a regular front-runner, while Ross Chastain added himself to the winners’ list with a notable playoff triumph.
The support series has delivered plenty of standout stories as well. Jeff Green won the first Xfinity Series (now O'Reilly Auto Parts Series) race at the venue in 1997, and local favourite Kyle Busch has celebrated multiple wins across both Xfinity and Trucks. Newer generations have also made their mark, with drivers such as Christopher Bell, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and Corey Heim securing important victories. In ARCA, Jason Jarrett took the inaugural win in 2001, followed in later years by champions and race winners including Frank Kimmel, Alex Bowman, and Ty Gibbs.
